Acoustic Neuroma Information and Peer Support

The Acoustic Neuroma Association provides information about what an acoustic neuroma is, and how it is treated. It has an online support forum, where members can compare notes about treatment. They may have a local support group in your area.

The  Los Angeles group meets quarterly, and is very uplifting and inspirational. If you are in the Los Angeles area, you may want to give it a try.

Books I Recommend

  • Love, Medicine & Miracles by Bernie Siegel, M.D. -tips from a cancer surgeon on being an active and informed patient.
  • Timeless Healing by Herbert Benson, M.D. -theory and instructions for the "relaxation response," which can be used as a secular or spiritual practice, for achieving a calm mind and body.
  • Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain-theory and practice of visualizing desired outcomes, to assist in a more hopeful attitude.
  • A Whole New Normal by Marla Bronstein -written by an acoustic neuroma patient who is active in the ANA. Her book is inspiration for hope in your journey, in a personal memoir format.
  • Up and Running by Jami Goldman-the story of a "non-athletic" young woman who lost both her legs to frostbite, and who, through her physical therapy process,  became a champion runner and "icon" for Nike. Her book was new at the time of my own surgery, and was a great source of inspiration to me on my 50th birthday, as a newbie recovering from surgery.
  • "Feeling Good" by David Burns, M.D.-a self help book for depression, with many Cognitive Behavioral exercises. Any book by David Burns M.D. would be a helpful way to learn Cognitive Behavioral techniques, for depression, anxiety and panic, and for dealing with difficult situations with others.
  • "Hell in the Head: My War with a Brain Tumor and Other Evil Things" by David Douglas Shannon-the personal story of an actor/writer whose acting career came to a halt after his acoustic neuroma treatment. His acoustic neuroma journey takes him from one "misadventure" to another, yet he finds meaning and inspiration in the journey.
